Additional information

Avuncular tests calculate the likelihood of relatedness between a child and an aunt or uncle.

A child inherits exactly half of their genes from their biological father and the biological father shares around half of his genes in common with his full sibling, therefore the child will share around half of its paternal genes in common with the full sibling of the biological father. Based upon the number of genetic matches, the laboratory calculates the statistical likelihood that the alleged aunt/uncle is biologically related to the child versus being unrelated.

It may not be possible to achieve a conclusive result. Even though the siblings may have the same biological parents, the alleged father is not genetically identical to the alleged sibling and have different genetic markers. On the average, testing an alleged father’s full sibling allows us to determine only half of his genes.

To increase the certainty of the results, testing the mother of the child is strongly recommended, as this allows for identify genetic markers of the child that were inherited maternally and to eliminate them from consideration as possible paternal markers.

The test protocol is very rigorous and precise, and includes the reading of 22 DNA sequences (22 loci), giving the test a 99.99% certainty if the child's mother's sample is also provided.

Non-legal test

If the test is required for information purposes only (and not for legal purposes), we'll send you a collection kit, and you simply need to follow the collection and registration instructions, and then return the kit back to us. You will receive the result within 5 working days following its reception at the laboratory.

Legal test

The legal avuncular test provides a report that is officially recognized by the courts and other official authorities. Here are just a few examples of when a legal avuncular test report may be useful: government requirements for identity, alimony and inheritance purposes.

Like the informative test, you will receive a collection kit at home, and an accredited nurse will come to your home to proceed with sample collection. She or he will act as a neutral, objective witness to ensure that the chain of transmission is respected, and that the test is admissible before judicial and government authorities.

Process

If you are purchasing a non-legal test:

  • After ordering your test, you'll receive a collection kit that includes 3 swabs (for the aunt or uncle, for the child, and for the child's mother). You'll find the collection instructions in the envelope. This is a painless process.
  • Register your kit and personal information in your customer portal on the Adnà website.
  • Return your sample (in its original envelope) to the laboratory for sequencing and analysis.
  • You will receive an e-mail notification that your test report has arrived in your Adnà customer portal.

If you are purchasing a legal test:

  • One of our agents will contact you to set up an appointment with you and a nurse who will come to your home.
  • In order to respect a strict chain of custody, it is the nurse's responsibility to open the collection kit you have received.
    The nurse will seal your sample in its original envelope and forward it to the analysis laboratory.
  • You will be notified by e-mail that your analysis report has arrived in your customer portal on the Adnà website. This report will have legal force with the authorities.

What types of genetic tests do you offer?

Our tests fall into several categories:

  • Parentage tests, which identify whether two or more individuals are related;
  • Lifestyle tests, which provide information on how your genes may influence your lifestyle, preferences, health and well-being;
  • Health tests, which identify, among other things, genetic predispositions to certain diseases or the way in which the body metabolizes a particular drug;
  • Finally, we offer a prenatal test for pregnant women.

What are the limits of your tests?

  • Our tests are for informational and educational purposes. They are not intended to be used as a diagnostic tool. Your traits are not only influenced by genetics, but also by many other factors such as social and geographical environment, education, lifestyle, etc. We encourage you to interpret the results with caution, and to consult healthcare professionals for further evaluation if necessary.
  • The information extracted from the tests and presented in our reports should be considered as indications of predisposition and not as definitive diagnoses. Their relevance may vary according to numerous environmental factors.

What is the scientific basis for your tests?

  • A parentage test uses DNA to establish family relationships. It analyzes genetic markers to identify biological relationships between parents and children, grandparents, uncles, aunts, twins and siblings. DNA comparison reveals specific genetic similarities, indicating a family relationship.  These tests exploit genetic patterns of inheritance shared by members of the same family. In this way, they can map out extended family connections, offering a precise overview of biological links.  Our parentage tests offer close to 99.9% accuracy.
  • Our lifestyle and health tests are based on a combination of cutting-edge technologies and internationally recognized scientific studies. DNA sequencing is performed using Illumina technology. This technology can analyze over 700,000 genetic markers. Added to this is the integration of peer-reviewed studies accepted by the international scientific community, which enable a connection to be made between a particular gene and a potential predisposition. This ensures that reports are based on recent, relevant scientific data that reflect an established scientific consensus.

What information can I find in your genetic reports?

  • Depending on the type of test you choose, you can expect to receive detailed information about your parentage, your ancestry, personalized health advice, or insight into specific genetic traits.

Can your tests identify predispositions to certain diseases?

  • Yes, our Genetic Predisposition Test answers this question. However, this test is not intended for diagnostic purposes.
