Sibling DNA test in Quebec and Canada: are you biological siblings?
Adnà’s siblingship test compares the DNA of two to four people to assess whether they share both biological parents (full siblings), one parent (half-siblings), or neither. The saliva sample is collected at home and is painless. The analysis is done in Canada by a laboratory accredited to ISO 17025 and recognized by the Standards Council of Canada. You receive a PDF report by email 5 to 7 business days after the lab receives your samples.
It is the test to choose when the parent in question is not available: an absent or deceased father, an adoption, a family reunion or an inheritance question.
How much does a sibling DNA test cost?
The price depends on how many people are tested and how the result will be used. All prices include the kit, the prepaid return label, the lab analysis and the report.

Informational or legal test: which one do you need?
Both versions use the same analysis and offer the same accuracy. What changes is the proof of identity of the people tested.
- Informational test (from $299). You collect the samples yourself, at home. It is the right choice to answer a personal or family question privately.
- Legal test (from $399). Samples are collected by our team, at our offices or at your home anywhere in Greater Montreal. We verify the identity of each participant and document the chain of custody. The result can then be used in court proceedings, such as an estate settlement. It is not accepted for immigration purposes.
If a judge will need to see the result, choose the legal version from the start. An informational test cannot become a legal one afterwards, because legal samples must be collected by an independent person.
How the test works, step by step
- Order online. Your kit ships the same day and arrives within 2 to 3 business days. It contains one sample envelope per person tested.
- Collect the samples. Each person rubs a swab inside their cheek for a few seconds. It is painless. Our video guide shows every step.
- Send the samples back with the prepaid return label included in your kit. Just drop the envelope in any mailbox.
- Get your results by email, as a PDF, 5 to 7 business days after the lab receives your samples.
How to read the result
The lab analyzes 22 genetic markers (loci) and calculates the probability that the people tested are full siblings, half-siblings or unrelated. The result is expressed as a percentage, from almost 0% to 99.99%.
You often hear that full siblings share 50% of their DNA and half-siblings 25%. These are only averages: the actual share varies from one family to another. That is why the lab relies on a statistical calculation rather than a simple percentage of shared DNA.
The test shows whether you share one or two parents. On its own, it does not say which parent you have in common. If the question is about a specific father who can be tested, a paternity test will give a clearer answer.
Siblingship test or another relationship test?
- The parent is available: test them directly with a paternity test or a maternity test.
- The grandparents are available: a grandparentage test is another option.
- You are twins: the twin zygosity test shows whether you are identical or fraternal twins.
Is there a free sibling DNA test?
No. A reliable DNA test requires an analysis in an accredited lab, so it is never free. If the question comes up in court, for example in an estate, your lawyer can tell you whether expert fees may be covered in your situation.
Consent and privacy
Every adult tested must give consent. For a minor child, a parent or legal guardian consents. Your results are sent only to the email address used for the order.

How does a home paternity test actually work?
The process is designed to be simple, fast and discreet. You receive a kit containing everything you need to collect a cheek swab sample in a few seconds, at home, with no appointment or medical procedure. You return the samples in the envelope provided. The analysis is performed in accredited laboratories and your results are sent to you as a PDF at the email address linked to your order, 5 to 7 business days after the lab receives them.
Our at-home paternity test starts at $199. The same process applies to all our DNA relationship tests: maternity, siblingship, grandparentage, aunt or uncle.

Should I choose a legal or an informational paternity test?
Both tests analyze DNA in the same way and offer the same scientific accuracy. The difference lies in the chain of custody and how the results are used:
• The informational test is done at home with a standard kit, without identity verification. It is for personal or family use.
• The legal test requires a supervised sample collection, formal identity verification and full chain-of-custody documentation. Its results can be recognized in court proceedings. It is not valid for immigration purposes.
Our paternity test is available as an informational version from $199 and a legal version from $299. You choose the version when you order.
Does a cheek swab or saliva sample hurt?
No. The sample collection is painless. It is a simple cheek swab: you gently rub a swab inside the cheek for a few seconds. No blood draw, no needle and no medical procedure. The method is safe, gentle and suitable for all ages, including children.
It’s the same simple step for all our DNA relationship tests, whether you are testing a newborn or a grandparent.
How much can I trust the results of my paternity test?
DNA relationship tests are highly accurate. When a biological relationship is confirmed, it is confirmed with a probability of at least 99.99%. When the tested man is not the biological father, the exclusion is 100% certain. Analyses follow strict international standards in ISO 17025 accredited laboratories.
Accuracy is the same for the at-home and legal versions of our paternity test.
Can I do my paternity test myself at home without losing reliability?
Yes, as long as you follow the kit instructions and avoid any male contamination during sample collection. Accuracy is then the same as in a lab: 99.99%. If in doubt, the Adnà team can guide you.

Which alternative samples (toothbrush, blood, etc.) do you accept for a relationship test?
Yes. For DNA relationship tests, our partner laboratory can analyze non-standard samples, such as a toothbrush or blood. The analysis costs $650 and takes longer, because the lab must first extract the DNA using a method suited to the material. Some samples (rootless hair, old tissue, very old cigarette butts) contain very little or degraded DNA.
You can order this option on the paternity test page (“Special sample collection” option). Here is the list of possible samples and their success rates:

• Whole semen: frozen vial, fresh swab, or tissue.
• Whole saliva: tube, preferably with preservative.
• Whole blood: lavender-top vacutainer tube.
• Blood/saliva on filter paper: ideally less than 60 days old.
• Bone marrow: fresh or frozen, not on a slide or in paraffin.
• Mucus / sputum: tissue, paper towel, or napkin.
• Toothbrush: let air dry for 30 minutes before packaging.
Success rate: 60% to 90%
• Blood stain on fabric: bandages, gauze, tissues, clothing.
• Semen stain on fabric: gauze, tissue, or clothing (indicate the area).
• Saliva stain on fabric: same, indicate the area.
• Unknown stain on fabric: indicate the area.
• Clipped nails: 5 to 10 recommended.
• Diabetic test strips: several recommended.
• Ear swab: cotton swab / Q-tip.
• Umbilical cord: dried, with a sample from the mother.

Twin zygosity or siblingship test: which one should I choose for my twins or my brothers and sisters?
A twin zygosity test (from $249) determines whether twins are monozygotic (identical) or dizygotic (fraternal) by comparing their DNA. A siblingship test (from $299) assesses the biological relationship between two people to find out whether they are brothers or sisters, by analyzing the proportion of shared DNA.
In short: twins who want to know if they are identical or fraternal choose twin zygosity; siblings who wonder whether they share the same father choose siblingship.
Is DNA paternity testing legal in Canada?
Yes. In Canada, DNA relationship tests are legal and widely used for personal, medical or legal purposes. The consent of all participants is required to take a test with Adnà. For the legal implications specific to your situation, consult a legal professional.
For personal peace of mind, the at-home version of our paternity test is enough. If the result must be presented in court, choose the legal version.
Is Adnà’s DNA test accepted for an immigration application?
No. Adnà does not offer DNA tests validated for immigration purposes. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires a strict protocol, with chain of custody and identification performed exclusively by laboratories it recognizes. We recommend Wyndham Forensic Group (WFG), a Canadian ISO 17025 accredited laboratory recognized by IRCC.
For personal use or court proceedings, our paternity test is available in at-home and legal versions.
Can a relationship test also tell me about my disease risks?
No. DNA relationship tests are extremely reliable (99.99%) for confirming or excluding a biological relationship, but they provide no information about health or ethnic origins. Legal relationship tests are recognized for court proceedings; they are not valid for immigration purposes.
