Additional information

The grandparentage test we offer determines the probability that a grandparent is the biological grandfather or grandmother of a child.

A child inherits exactly 50% of its genes from its biological mother and 50% from its biological father. Therefore, this child shares exactly 25% of its genes with each biological grandparent. If both biological parents of the alleged parent are tested and they do not have the paternal or maternal genes between them, then they are excluded as biological grandparents. If both biological parents of the presumed parent have the paternal or maternal genes between them, they are not excluded as biological grandparents.

It may not be possible to obtain conclusive results in a grandparent DNA test if both alleged grandparents are not tested. We recommend testing both alleged grandparents as well as one parent if possible to achieve the most accurate results.

It is also important to understand that, in reporting the results of a DNA grandparent test, the laboratory assumes that the tested alleged grandparents are, in fact, the biological parents of the unavailable, alleged parent. If there is any question regarding the paternity of the unavailable alleged parent, then the alleged biological grandfather should not be tested.

The test protocol is very rigorous and precise, and includes the reading of 22 DNA sequences (22 loci), giving the test a 99.99% certainty if both grand-parents' samples are provided.

Simplified Process:

  1. Order your test and receive a kit containing two sample envelopes (for one grandparent and one child). You may also order a test for two grandparents by selecting “1 child and 2 grandparents.”
  2. Receive your kit: activate your test using the activation code provided. Collect the samples by following the instructions included in your kit.
  3. Return the samples using the prepaid return label included in your kit so they can be analyzed in the laboratory.
  4. Access your results: view your confidential report through our secure online portal.

Results are ready within five business days after the samples are received at the laboratory.
